just completed a wintersport trip to japan and discovered the joys of candids with sleeping japanese people on the train, using a P5000 and Wide angle lens.

On occasion I have used a 52<77mm step up ring for 77mm filters for wide angle sunset shots where I live in Saipan and there is slight Vignetting, but still appreciably wide angle even if I zoom in one stop.

I really enjoy the P5000, and am thinking of an upgrade to a DSLR rather than a 5100 since 2 more megapixels doesnt change enough for me.

I like the idea of live view mode in the D300 as I compose through the LCD.

On LCD composition, and VR, you can noticeably see the VR working through the LCD during movie mode and especially while using the TCE3 ED lens birding while shooting from the hand, simply amazing that anything can be captured at that distance that isnt completely blurry.

Movies are noisy from the P5000, I wonder if they sorted that in the P5100? they are still very clear at 30/FPS in TV* mode, which is quite nice for making movies with music dubbed over for you tube contributions; thats something that DSLR's arent used for.

the P series seems to bridge both Full DSLR and compact models well for now. thanks for the insight and alternative review.

cheers.

Hi Tom,

I couldn't agree more about the D40. I would have kept it if it would autofocus with the standard 50mm f1.8 lens. They would make a neat package.

Very interesting and I love my point-and-shoot! I take it everywhere! The d200 or d300 would be on my wish list! What I don't like about the D40 is that you can't use the older lenses (which I have) with it.
